Mulching Mat - Squares
As their name suggests these are a simple square of material with a slit cut in the middle, enabling them to be placed over the top of small single stemmed plants . The slit can also be cut to one edge for use with larger plants, on request.
Mulching - Treespats™
Treespats™ are a patented design, with an sewn overlapped section running from the middle to one edge. This makes them easier to fit, and provides better weed control.

Anchoring / Fixing
|
|
All mulch mats should be firmly anchored in place using either our plastic or steel pegs. The lower cost plastic peg, which has 4 pairs of barbs, is generally preferred, but a steel peg may be better on stony ground.
The number of anchoring pegs needed per mat depends on the size of the mat and the exposure of the site. If pegs are the only means of anchoring, we recommend four for the standard square, five for the standard Treespat™, eight for the large square and nine for the large Treespat™. |

Photodegradable Materials
Polyethylene is widely accepted as an effective and low-cost mulching material and is normally anchored by being buried along its edges.
Spun-bonded Polypropylene is water permeable, and unlike woven polypropylene its edges will not fray when cut - It should not be allowed to flap.
Woven Polypropylene is water permeable, easily pegged and much stronger than either polythene or spun-bonded polypropylene.

Biodegradable Materials
Jute/Hessian mats are manufactured from a mixture of recycled jute and cashmere hair, needled onto a hessian backing. As it degrades nitrogen and other beneficial elements are released into the ground to benefit of the tree. These mats should be pegged, as burying can stimulate premature rotting.
Bituminous Felt should be anchored by burying in the corners, saving the cost of pegs. On wet sites with a high pH, rotting can be more rapid so pegs may be required.

N.B. jute and hybrid jute can be damaged by birds seeking nesting materials
N.B. None of these sheet materials will necessarily provide totally weed-free conditions. Some grasses, for example, may penetrate even woven polypropylene mats.
